Collar bone fracture !!!!

The time was around 3 PM..my dad had dropped me home from school and was returning back to work in his motorbike…

I was resting in my couch watching my favorite cartoon ‘doraemon’… that we got a call from dad’s number informing us that he had met with an accident…

We managed to arrange an autorikshaw and went to see him in the hospital where he was taken..

We went into the casualty and the only thing I remember now was that he was holding or rather supporting his right hand with his left hand..and at that point I merely didn’t know about these signs.

Soon after that, we spoke to the doctor and he said that he had broke his collar bone and he needed immediate surgery…

Later on the next day he underwent the surgery…

And cut to now that is after 5 years..he still has the plate and screws in his clavicle inserted during the surgery.

So this was my personal experience with the collar bone fracture…and now I know ( perks of being in a medical profession) the reason why this fracture is quite common in RTAs ( Road traffic accidents).

Clavicle; superior and inferior view

The collar bone aka CLAVICLE is an ‘S’ shaped bone. And the commonest site for its fracture is the point where its two curvatures meet which is also the weakest point of the bone.

The frature can occur due to a strong impact on the hand or shoulder, when the person falls on the outstretched hand or shoulder.

X -RAY of clavicle fracture

When the fracture occurs the lateral fragment is displaced downward due to the weight of the upperlimb and the medial fragment is slightly elevated. This is the reason why the patient supports his fractured hand with the opposite hand as I mentioned in my dad’s case.

And it can be treated by joining the two parts by putting a plate as soon as possible because there is a chance that it might grow while retaining in that position.

It’s actually a wonderful feeling when you get to know the reason behind certain phenomenas and incidents that you have watched while growing up and this is what happens when you are in a medical profession. Proud Medico. Cheers :))
